A year ago, just as Kim and her kids were leaving the animal shelter with their newly adopted cat named Cosmo, a sweet all black kitty looked up at Kim and locked eyes with her. The connection was immediate and instead of leaving with just Cosmo, Kim brought home a second kitty, and named him Buzz Lightyear. A year later, when indoor-only Buzz escapes, Kim becomes the local spectacle (a position I am all too familiar with
In the end when he is finally located, Buzz proves that he is the perfect example of a kitty that's somewhere "in-between" — he's not nearly as timid as Sage and he's also nowhere near as calm as Alex. And if you follow the model that the more timid a cat is, the more they will hide their body, Buzz's behavior matched that same in-between personality perfectly: he actually showed his body but only in dusky light, and while he did let Kim approach eventually, he initially ran off to another yard. Eventually he let Kim close enough so she could grab him. Scroll down to read how she was able to find her very special Buzz Lightyear on page 2, post #75.

I need advice as to the direction I need to take my search. I feel
as though I am getting stuck in a rut.
My sweet cat Buzz (Lightyear) has been missing since April 1. He
went out on our back deck and jumped underneath it on a nice day
while I opened the screen door to go outside. I unfortunatley
assumed he'd hop back up and want in. IF only I knew...He is an
indoor-only, neutered, front declawed male. We adopted him 16 mo ago
at the age of approximately two. He was not declawed then (so I
wonder if he was previously outdoor access??). Since he has been
missing the temps have ranged from 10-80 degrees and we have had some
snow, rain, and thunderstorms. He was somewhat afraid in larger
storms. Do you think the storms have kept him hidden and therefore
closer to home too? I have posted signs (many removed and needed to
be rehung) in a 2-3 mile radius, flyered every mailbox in every
subdivision within a 1+ mile of us, placed an ad in the newspaper,
visit the shelter (regularly), contacted local vets and prayed!. I am
also trapping in our subdivision where a sighting occurred a week and
a half ago and have only trapped a racoon once. We live in a semi-
rural area but it is populated with a lot of subdivisions and
people. Although our immediate subdivision only has 25 houses. A
few fields and tree lines inbetween them. There is a new subdivision
being built behind the houses across the street from me. I have
talked to some of the contractors but they have not seen him.
As far as predators go there are cayotee said to be in the area but
none of the neighbors has ever seen any. I have only seen two in the
last three years. One running through my backyard over a year ago
(toward a field) and once on the side of the road eating a deer that
had been hit by a car. So if they are in our immediate area they are
most likely travelling through and not making a home too close by.
But yesterday my other cat snuck out briefly when I opened the same
door to let my dog in. I watched the cat while my son grabbed my
shoes so that I could go get him. WHile I was watching a fox walked
from the side of the house and appeared to head toward the cat. I
SCREAMED the cats name he turned spotted the fox and chased him!!
The cat stopped a yard away and came back. That was the first fox
I've ever seen here and it was just after the sun came up. I looked
up foxes and cats and read that they have a mutual respect for each
other and foxes do not tend to pray upon cats. Not impossible but
highly unlikely. I sure hope! SO while I think it may be possible
that my missing cat was found by a predator I believe (hoping) he is
in hiding.
From what I have read Buzz does fit the profile of a timid indoor cat
that is hiding. There are a lot of places for a cat to hide in our
neighborhood. In the past when Buzz has gotten close to the door he
would run right back inside. He is a calm, gentle cat who was not
overly friendly to visitors. He was somewhat aloof (spelling?)to
everyone except me. Just started to let my children pet him. He did
sleep in my daughters room though. Loved to be petted but not held.
As far as sightings go ... He was spotted on day 12 (three houses
down on the other side of the street early morning) and day 13 (three
houses down on my side of the street at 10:30 pm). I was called to
the second sighting within five minutes but could not find him. I
carried tuna down there with me and then back home and left it on my
porch. It was gone in the morning. Since then (or prior) none of
the food I have left out has been eaten. Today is day 24. Nothing
else in the neighborhood since then. I have also had a lot of
reports of sightings where I have posters and flyers but can not
confirm any were him. A few I have been able to say are not him as
the sightings were of cats with long-hair or had some white on them.
My Buzz is a short-haired all black cat. We do not seem to have any
outdoor neighborhood cats that roam. A house 1/4 mile away feeds
feral cats but has not seen our cat come to eat. I am pretty
positive the sightings on day 12 and day 13 were him. Plus they were
so close to me!
Does anyone have any ideas? My gut is that he is in the neighborhood
still but with no sightings in the last week and a half I am starting
to wonder and get very down. I also do not want to search too small
an area.
I have had a few strange calls. One woman offered me her all black
cat. "All I'd need is a box to come get him." And a man 15-20 miles
away swore he had my cat at his junk yard. I think he wanted a
reward. The cat he had was not neutered though. I had a feeling
he'd get that taken care of if he thought he'd get a large reward!
Thank you for reading this. Sorry it is so long! Everyday I wake up
and think today will be the day.....
Kim
P.S. While I was at the shelter yesterday a man was reunited with
his cat so I do believe it worthwhile to keep checking!!!
