Cat name: Sunshine
Male
Neutered
Age: 4 1/2
Breed: Orange Tabby
Personality: Scaredy cat, timid
Is your cat friendly to only a few special humans and special cats? Yes, friendly with my husband and me, but afraid of everyone else. Hides when strangers come in the house. More bonded with our other cats than to us, although he is bonded enough that he gives me kisses in exchange for food and will play fetch with us. Doesn't like to be held down, and will only sleep with us if very cold. Have only had him around new cats when we first brought him home to our menagerie of already six cats. He was only 10 weeks old, and hid for a while, but after a few weeks adjusted well and became bonded with all the other cats.
Was your cat feral at one time or born to a feral mom? Don't think so.
Date missing: 7/12/03
Circumstances of cat missing: My husband had the door open, and though he's never before run out, he did this time.
Has cat ever been outside or missing previously? Describe behavior when outside: Once, jumped out of my arms when I carried him outside and immediately ran to woods in back. Hid under brambles and brush and couldn't find him for two days. We would hear meowing from time to time, but then all would be quiet, and we couldn't locate him. After two days, I went out with a can of tuna and sat in the middle of the brambled area and called to him. After about an hour, he finally meowed. I continued to talk in my high pitched baby voice to him, and he finally found his way to me.
Describe the area where your cat first became missing: In woods behind our house, about 30 feet away.
Describe the area and direction that your cat was last seen heading: My husband last saw him up the bank just on the other side of the woods (steep bank up to a large cemetery in back of us - border of woods of about 20 feet between our yard and the cemetery) two nights after he got lost. Neighbors have said they saw him, but we're not sure these are reliable sightings.
Any predators in area: coyotes, aggressive dogs, etc? Two stray cats were in the area for several days after he disappeared. Also have foxes in the woods.
Any positive sightings? Does sighting seem solid? Neighbors have said they saw him, but we're not sure these are reliable sightings.
Any health problems? None - very healthy
What methods of locating cat have you tried so far: Calling, putting out food, searching with light at night, sitting still in the woods and hoping he'd smell me, walking all through wooded area several hundred yards in both directions from our house and all over our neighborhood - up to 30 houses away. Have set traps and put out litter and things that smell familiar to him (blankets from kitty bed and my socks on the back steps). Have set traps both near to house and in distant locations of possible sightings. Have used tuna, catfish and dry cat food. Have located 3 people in surrounding neighborhoods who feed feral/stray cats and have given them a flyer. Posted flyers all around and outside our neighborhood. Put ad in paper and on net. Have been getting advice already from lostpetsupport group on net (Kat Albrecht, et al.). Drive around at all hours, checking neighborhood, under cars, and checking traps.
Am still hopeful after 13 days that we'll find him.
Barbara
