Now when Sunshine came home his collar was gone. It was a safety collar. So if his remote device falls off that's not gonna do a whole heck of a lot of good. Monique didn't you say only use the non-breakaway collars? Is this thing about kitties getting hung up or killed by non-breakaway collars an urban myth? or does anyone here know first hand of kitties who have actually been harmed? I remember Jenne's Katka was injured by her collar, but she also was saved because of her collar. That's the only one I know of personally.

Out of several first hand experiences only one was fatal. It was a dog. The rest were scary or slight injuries. This bulletin board gets a huge amount of traffic. If we were to use a non-breakaway, it would keep our kitties from starving to death because we could find them. On the other hand, if we had a remote beeper, wouldn't we also find our kitties BEFORE the collar snagged on something and broke away like with Sunshine?

My cats proved to be ingenious at loosening and taking off their own collars. They would leave them laying on the floor. I began worrying because a few times I've found the collar stuck on the lower jaw while still attached or a cat would manage to get a leg through. I used the two finger rule of tightness on the collars too! I've now got them in collars that hook with ID tags. These collars also have some stretch and give to them. The theory is that if the cat really were in trouble, it would stretch enough to let them slip out. So far, the collars have remained on!! Score one for me! Rene

While it seems to test okay in terms of beeping and flashing (up to the 100 yards, more or less, distance claimed), you have to be in a direct line with the collar device, with nothing between you and it, if you're any distance at all away from it. Only if you're really close will it work if something is between the locator and the beeper portion. The part that goes on the collar is very heavy, and I'm wondering if it wouldn't start to hurt Sunshine's little neck after a while. We put it on him, and he dragged it around without complaining, but I have my doubts about it for long term use. Sure, it's better than losing him, but we'll have to be very careful to test it from time to time to be sure the battery in the collar portion is good. With regard to the break-away vs. non-breakaway collar, I'm still undecided about what to use in conjunction with this device.

I guess it's better than nothing, though. The first thing I did after reading your comments on it was to go to the World of Zeus site, Steve Wozniaks new company that will make another device locater, to see when the heck they would be on the market. It still looks like another year away. The cool thing is that they are expecting production costs to be only $25 so maybe retail $100 is my guess. The radius of single station is up to 1 mile or 2! If you connect up a lot of other stations the range could be infinte (well maybe not over the ocean). But heck a mile is good enough for me. I'd be willing to pay more for it. The one you mention sounds great -- if it works at greater distances, even wandering kitties could be found! I take this thing off Sunshine from time to time to give his little neck a rest, but worry constantly that he'll slip out when it's off. He hasn't even gone near a door since we got him back, so maybe my paranoia will lessen after a while! However, I'm a worrier when it comes to my babies, so it may take a looooooooooong while. She managed to get her whole leg in the collar and it was so tight that it injured her side rather badly. She had to get surgery. That's just my story. I know that break-away collars can cause injuries and i'm not going to use that type of collar anymore. It was the type with the elastic bit on one side-supposedly so that if the collar got caught, the cat could get out of it without being strangled. She had never even attempted to get out of it before, but in the lost situation, things are different, i guess. There are probably downsides to every type of collar.
